MADISON (WKOW) -- A Madison police officer is recovering in the hospital after he was seriously injured in a head-on collision Saturday. His K9 was also hurt.

Officer Ryan Kimberley and his K9 Freddie were assisting another agency in a chase involving a tow truck. The chase ended on Terminal Drive, after the tow truck crashed into Kimberley's squad car, which eventually led to a fire.

"I still have a text on my phone that's unanswered from me, saying, 'Are you okay?' and never got a response," said Steve Dahlgren, president of Capital K9s. "Little did I know at the time, his phone was probably in his burning squad car."
