ROSELAND, La. — Nearly 40 miles downriver from Smitty's, near Lees Landing, the Tangipahoa River contains oil. The booms deployed by the EPA are trying to contain it, but the whiffs of oil scent make it obvious. An EPA representative says they're "looking at 40 plus miles of impact of the river that's been continuously cleaned."
Further upriver, closer to the explosion site, the oil sheen is much more apparent. So far, the EPA says they've recovered more than seven million gallons of liquid.
We finally know what chemicals were on site at Smitty's at the time of the explosion. The more than 300-page document, obtained by the Louisiana Illuminator, primarily lists motor oils, lubricants, and antifreeze, according to retired Tulane Professor of Environmental Toxicology Luann E. White.
