BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Lawmakers are taking a closer look at how pornography may be affecting kids, families, and relationships, and whether the state can do more to protect young people from its growing reach.

A state legislative committee spent some time on September 30 hearing from experts who say pornography is now easier to access than ever and that exposure is happening at younger ages.

Dr. Jill Manning, a mental health researcher, told lawmakers that pornography can shape how young people view sex, consent, and relationships. She said those effects can carry into adulthood and impact marriages and family life.

North Dakota State Rep. Lori VanWinkle, Minot, said the committee’s goal is to protect children and strengthen families.
