NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - A Nacogdoches nonprofit is continuing work to preserve one of the oldest houses in the Zion Hill District.

Paul Jackson, president of the African American Heritage Project, says public support has been key to the nonprofit’s work to preserve the Clay House, which is 125 years old and was once home to Zion Hill Baptist Church’s pastor JC Sweeney.

“We’re very fortunate to have a lot of support from the community,” Jackson said.

The nonprofit took over the project in 2010 and has been slowly restoring the house. They’ve replaced the rood and damaging siding, refurbished the chimney and painted the building.

They’re now working on the inside, having just completed the mantel and working on refurbishing kitchen fixtures.
