NIGTON, Texas (KTRE) - An almost 300 square foot room and two racks is all there is right now at the Nigton Historical Development Project’s food pantry.

“I only expect it to grow from here,” Melvin Hicks, the pantry’s assistant director.

The pantry has been open for almost two months and there have only been three distributions. Hicks said at the first one they helped 80 people, and by the third one they helped more than 125 people.

“I would have never believed that so many people in this area would welcome our services,” Hicks said.

The town of less than 200 people have limited access to grocery stores.

Hicks said people living in Nigton and Apple Springs normally travel to either Lufkin or Groveton to shop. Both commutes are more than 20 minutes.
