LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Popular trails at Lake Mead National Recreation Area reopened Tuesday, Sept. 30, allowing hikers access to Goldstrike Canyon, Arizona Hot Spring, White Rock Canyon and Liberty Bell.
The announcement came hours before a scheduled last-chance vote to keep the federal government running.
"As summer shifts into fall, conditions at Lake Mead can change quickly — sometimes even hour by hour. This is also when we see a rise in rescues for visitors experiencing heat illness," according to a social media post.
"To protect both hikers and emergency responders, route closures are now tied to forecasted conditions, not calendar dates," the post advised the public. Hikers should carry plenty of water and only go out during the cooler parts of the day.
