Tuesday is a National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools.

It's a day where tribes reflect and remember more than a century of history that's affected generations of Native children and their families.

For more than 150 years, Indian Boarding schools led to the loss of Native American traditions and languages. But there was also abuse and even death.

An investigative report from the Department of the Interior found that at least 1,800 children were taken from their communities and forced into these schools. The report also documented nearly 1,000 deaths but acknowledged that the number was likely higher.

Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Junior tells us the tribe is actively working to immerse their younger generations to learn their Native language.
