A former Midland police officer is facing possible jail time for her part in a plot to smuggle drugs into two jails using drones.

Ex-Staffordshire Police detective constable Clare Davenport was part of a four-person gang involved in a bid to fly contraband into HMPs Onley in Northamptonshire and Gartree in Leicestershire.

The 50-year-old would have been sacked had she not already retired, her former force said. Davenport pleaded guilty at Coventry Crown Court in August to conspiring to acquire/use/possess criminal property.

Peter King, 53, Kent George, 63, and Mervyn Foster, 46, were also involved in the racket, that ran throughout 2021 and 2022.

The packages inside the drones contained Class A and B drugs, spice, tobacco, mobile phones and other banned items.
