Former Deputy NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Marianne Gale has been appointed as the state's new Chief Health Officer after a lengthy recruitment process.

The state had been without a permanent CHO since last December, when Dr John Gerrard stepped down from the role after three years.

Then, in August, sources confirmed to the ABC an offer was made and then rescinded to Dr Krispin Hajkowicz — who was first offered the job in 2021 before resigning shortly after due to "personal reasons".

An international recruitment campaign advertised the role as earning up to $431,000 per year.

Dr Gale held the position of NSW Deputy Chief Health Officer during COVID-19, when she was a regular public-facing figure at the pandemic press conferences.
