As both Humbero and Imelda move out to sea, they will not impact land directly, but bring large swells and increased rip currents to ENC’s coastline. The Northern and Southern Outer Banks, as well as the Crystal Coast, will have high risks of rip currents today.

Highway 12 will see the highest impacts from overwash, and minor beach erosion is possible. Portions of Highway 12 in the northern section remain closed until Thursday, which includes the north end of Ocracoke Island. Hatteras Island could see impacts later this afternoon as the high tide approaches.

If you’re heading to the beach, keep these tips in mind:

Swim only near staffed lifeguard stations—they’re trained to spot trouble before it starts.

Look for the beach warning flags. A red flag means stay out of the water.
