COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) – A subcommittee of South Carolina’s Senate Medical Affairs Committee will hold a public hearing Wednesday on the Unborn Child Protection Act.
The bill, as it is currently written, would totally ban abortion in South Carolina.
According to state law, once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, at around six weeks of pregnancy, abortion is no longer an option; however, the law does make exceptions for rape, incest, and fatal fetal anomalies.
If signed into law, the bill would eliminate these exceptions and would also make abortion a felony in the state.
Women who terminate their pregnancies could face criminal prosecution, and doctors who perform abortion procedures could face up to 30 years in prison.
The bill has received some criticism. The group Pro Life Greenvill
