The Met Office has confirmed that the season's first named storm will batter the UK this weekend.

Storm Amy is forecast to unleash powerful winds and torrential downpours on Friday (October 3) and Saturday.

A yellow weather warning for strong winds was issued this morning (Wednesday), running from 6pm on Friday until 11.59pm on Saturday.

The Met Office states that Storm Amy is predicted to 'develop rapidly' on Friday, delivering 'very strong winds and heavy rain' to northern and western parts of the UK.

Tom Crabtree, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, explained: "Although there is still some uncertainty about the exact track Storm Amy will take, the system will bring gale force winds across northern and western regions, with gusts widely reaching 50 to 60 mph inland in north
