TOWN OF VAN BUREN, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- A dog is being credited with waking up two people inside a Van Buren home to a garage fire, according to NorthWest Fire District Chief Tony McIntyre.

The call came in around 10:20 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 30, for a fire on Gallagher Road.

When crews arrived, they could see flames in the attached garage of the home.

Chief McIntyre said the two people inside the home and the family dog were able to get out safely.

Firefighters had to bring in 1,000 gallons of water because the home is not located near fire hydrants.

McIntyre praised firefighters for the quick response, saying they were able to keep the bulk of the fire contained to the garage.

He said the fire started in the garage, but it's not clear what sparked it. He did call it accidental in nature
