Title: Canada Rejects Marineland's Request to Export Beluga Whales

Ottawa has turned down a request from Marineland to export its remaining beluga whales to China. Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson announced that the federal government will not issue an export permit for the 30 whales intended for the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom aquarium.

Thompson emphasized that granting the request would lead to a continued existence in captivity and a return to public entertainment for the whales. She stated, "Approving this request would mean a continued life in captivity and a return to public entertainment for the whales."

This decision aligns with a 2019 law that prohibits the captivity of whales and dolphins, bans entertainment shows featuring these animals, and forbids breeding. Since the law was enacted, 20 beluga whales have died at Marineland, leaving the 30 that remain as the last captive whales in Canada.

Marineland has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the government's decision. The situation highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of marine mammals in captivity and the legal framework surrounding their welfare in Canada.
