BLOOMINGDALE, Ohio — Students in the carpentry program at Jefferson County Joint Vocational School are putting their skills to work on projects ranging from toolboxes to modular homes, with an eye on careers in the trades.
Instructor Dave Lucas, in his fifth year at JVS, and classroom aide Mark Starcher are guiding 28 juniors and seniors through measuring and cutting wood to building full-scale structures. Students are constructing their fourth modular home on campus, continuing a tradition that has included building several houses in the nearby Breezewood subdivision.
“The juniors have been building wall and floor systems and door and window headers for load-bearing structures,” Lucas said. “Eventually, they will have the skills to construct a modular home.”
