WEATHERSFIELD TWP., Ohio (WKBN) - First responders were called out to handle an explosive device found in Weathersfield Township on Tuesday.

The fire department said someone came to the station around 4:40 p.m. to report that they had found what they believed was an explosive. The item was part of a recent acquisition from an auction site.

Firefighters examined the item and determined it was potentially dangerous. They followed safety protocols, including securing the surrounding area, immediately.

The Weathersfield Police Department and Bomb Squad were called to the scene.

The Bomb Squad identified the item as a railroad torpedo -- a small, inherently dangerous explosive charge historically placed on railway lines and designed to detonate when compressed by train wheels.
