HOUSTON (KIAH) -- Hours after the federal government shutdown at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, October 1, a range of impacts started happening across multiple agencies. Employees impacted by the shutdown included Homeland Security and Air traffic controllers.
What do we know?
Many government activities will be on hold due to employee furloughs and potential layoffs. Most Department of Homeland Security employees will continue working because many positions are connected to law enforcement who are essential workers. According to DHS, its plan was that about 14,000 of the agency's 271,000 employees would be furloughed if a government shutdown happened.
