NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Gov. Jeff Landry stood alongside federal and parish officials Wednesday (Oct. 1) to update the public on the cleanup effort still underway more than five weeks after a fire and explosions at the Smitty’s Supply Inc. plant in Roseland.

The Aug. 22 industrial fire released millions of gallons of oily material into ponds and waterways near the plant. Since then, EPA contractors have reportedly removed an estimated four million gallons of contaminated liquid, but officials say as much as 25 percent of the oily residue remains.

Landry said the push for Wednesday’s update began after he saw a video posted by Tangipahoa Parish photographer Eric McVicker showing slicks of oil still floating on nearby ponds .
