As frost warnings begin to appear in weather forecasts, a group of concerned citizens and homeless advocates gathered Wednesday at Tom Davies Square to lobby for the prompt opening of a downtown warming station.

Last year, an overnight drop-in centre at the Samaritan Centre on Elgin Street became available in October for folks needing a place to escape the elements, but the city — which provides funding — has a different schedule in mind this year.

“For some reason, they moved it to November, saying it’s not an emergency need right now,” said Ashley-Dawn of Movements of Purpose, a budding non-profit focused on feeding and helping those in need. “But in the month of October, we all know the weather goes down to below zero overnight.”
