A 17-year-old resident of an Alabama youth facility was beaten with fists, broomsticks and socks filled with potatoes and often hid in a locker to escape the abuse and fights, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday.

The lawsuit is the fourth filed against Camp SAYLA in Henry County alleging brutal abuse and systemic neglect of children in its care.

“This place operated more like a torture chamber than a treatment facility,” said Birmingham attorney Tommy James.

“The public needs to know what was going on behind those locked doors, and every abuser and enabler needs to be held accountable.”

The lawsuits focus on a former employee, 46-year-old Kenyatta Danzey, who was indicted last year on 17 counts of child abuse. Danzey’s trial is set for 2026.
