Thousands of residents in north Alabama are wondering when they will be able to return to work and the status of their future paychecks following the federal government’s shutdown on Wednesday morning.
The impact is expected to be felt the most at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, home to 42,000 civilian military and contract employees and 800 uniformed personnel.
Redstone’s website said it would not be updated due to a lapse in appropriations “except in cases of life, health and safety information.”
According to a Department of War directive issued before the shutdown at 12:01 a.m., employees whose compensation comes from sources other than annual appropriations are still expected to work, as would personnel whose jobs are necessary to protect life and property. Nationally, those numbers
