A Golden Valley food shelf that serves hundreds of families a week is grappling with a big financial loss.
PRISM's building lost power for about 12 hours on Sept. 20 after lightning struck a nearby power line, causing thousands of pounds of food to spoil, according to Executive Director Michelle Ness.
The nonprofit was forced to toss out milk, cheese and deli food estimated to cost around $7,500.
The outage also prompted PRISM to temporarily close its Shop for Change Thrift Store. Every dollar raised through sales at the thrift store goes towards purchasing food to stock the organization's food shelf.
PRISM is now asking for the community's help as it tries to bounce back from the setback.
“We need your help to recover,” the organization said in a Facebook post.
