The Campbell River RCMP has issued a public safety warning following a sharp increase in overdose deaths in the community.

According to the police, in the past five weeks, at least 11 people have lost their lives to suspected drug overdoses.

“We are deeply concerned by the sharp increase in overdose fatalities,” said Insp. Jeff Preston, officer in charge of the Campbell River RCMP in a media release on Oct. 1. “Each of these deaths represents a person with family, friends, and a future, and we do not want to see this tragic trend continue.”

The RCMP, in collaboration with local health authorities, is urging anyone who uses drugs or has loved ones who do to take extra precautions.
