MONROE – The last few days have been very rewarding for the St. Mary Catholic Central girls golf team.

The Kestrels won the Huron League championship last week for the first time since 1994 and followed that up by winning the Monroe County Championship on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

“We’ve got a really good team right now,” SMCC coach Jeff Kansier said. “We have a lot of good athletes on this team.”

The Kestrels were the class of the field at Green Meadows Golf Course, shooting a round of 372 to finish 18 strokes ahead of runner-up Monroe.

“We actually didn’t play our best today,” Kansier said. “We got off to a slow start. The girls kept it in their mind that there was a lot of golf left. They have been battling all year.”
