Five years ago, during the first Trump administration’s anti-immigrant crackdown, Oakland leaders passed a law barring the city from contracting with companies that also work with federal immigration agencies by providing them with data services or helping build detention centers. And two years earlier, city officials passed a similar law , barring contracts with companies looking to help build Trump’s border wall.
But to pave Oakland’s broken roads, city leaders may need to waive some of these rules.
Oakland city staff want to award a contract worth up to $4 million to Martin Marietta Materials, a North Carolina company with hundreds of quarries, mines, and facilities in 28 states. Under the contract, Martin Marietta would provide hot mix asphalt to fill potholes and build speed b
