FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Allen County Department of Environmental Management and Fort Wayne Fire Department are teaming up for Fire Prevention Week to spread awareness of the potential risks of lithium-ion batteries.

Many electronics in homes today, like smartphones, tablets, power and lawn tools, laptops, e-cigarettes, headphones, and toys, are powered by lithium-ion batteries. But if not used correctly or damaged, the batteries can be a hazard, potentially starting a fire or exploding.

“Lithium-ion batteries are powerful, convenient and they’re just about everywhere,” said ACDEM Director Stacie Hubbert.

To reduce those risks, officials say it’s important to know what devices are powered by lithium-ion batteries and follow the “buy, charge and recycle safely” approach:
