The City of Nanaimo has announced the purchase of two properties to expand Loudon Park, situated by Long Lake.

The two properties, along with a piece of Victoria Road, will add nearly half an acre to the park, which, before the purchases, was 1.72 acres.

The city paid nearly $2.2 million to purchase the two properties.

The purchase comes after Nanaimo City Council approved a controversial $10.8 million activity centre as part of a redevelopment of the park in April.

With mounting opposition to the plan, in part because nearly 30 mature trees would’ve been removed, council rescinded its decision.

Mayor Leonard Krog announced the development in front of a small audience at the park on Wednesday, with a number of city councillors in attendance.
