BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A Glenburn woman was sentenced in Federal Court to five years in prison for embezzling and altering money orders.
According to court records, 59-year-old Kelly Ballinger stole rent payments while she was managing an apartment complex in Portland.
Records show the rent payments were made by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Voucher Program tenants.
Ballinger is accused of telling tenants to pay their rent with blank money orders.
She would then write her name or her subordinate employee on the payee line.
Authorities say this went on for about six years.
As part of her sentence, she is ordered to pay nearly $1 million in restitution.
