BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The City of Birmingham is continuing its efforts to clean up overgrown lots across the city.

The Director of Public Works, Josh Yates, said the city is averaging 100 lots per week.

An emergency declaration was issued in July. Yates said the declaration has allowed them to hire two contract companies that now focus on public parks, so his crew focuses on residential lots.

Despite all the work that has already been done, Yates said there is still more work to do.

“We have a very large area we’re trying to cover. One hundred lots sounds like a lot, but in the scheme of things, we still have a lot more to go,” said Yates.

Yates said the emergency order also allows crews to cut additional overgrown properties while already on site.
