CALERA, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Ann Davis of Calera relies on a wheelchair and a ramp to get out of her van.
She needs a wide handicap spot so she can roll out, shop, and dine.
“If somebody’s parked in my loading zone, I can’t get in so I can’t move the car,” Davis said.
Meanwhile, Faye Baxley is now using a cane after knee replacement surgery. She knows a close parking spot is gold.
“There have been times when I come downtown and even the places that were convenient for me were filled,” Baxley said.
Drivers are abusing the system, making it harder for neighbors like Davis and Baxley.
“I’ve been in this situation a thousand times where I can’t get into my vehicle,” Davis said.
Calera Police tell WBRC there have been instances of wheelchairs users driving around businesses for 40 minutes t
