BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A public defender in Baton Rouge asked District Judge Louise Hines today for a retrial after defense attorney La’Deisha Woods was removed from a trial in August and held in contempt.
A second public defender who was appointed in her place and a prosecutor were also held in contempt, but Hines later changed her mind about the prosecutor and cleared her of any wrongdoing.
Brian Lavergne was on trial for the 2021 murders of Frederick Hollins and LaQuincia Jackson, who were found shot to death in an apartment in Tigerland.
Lavergne was in court on Wednesday to be sentenced for his conviction. Instead, the hearing took a different turn when a Judge addressed a motion alleging Lavergne was deprived of his rights after Attorney Woods was thrown out of the trial.
