Ty Tachibana from Japan, 16, has had a lot to adjust to as an exchange student at Waverly-Shell Rock High School.

First, there’s the 14-hour time difference from his home in Toyama, on the north side of the big island of Honshu.

His home city is listed as having a population of 415,844, as opposed to Waverly’s listed population of 10,576.

Then there’s the school, where Ty now has to move around between classes instead of staying put while the teachers move, as he is used to.

And his family situation is different, too, going from having an older brother at university and a 9-year-old brother at home to living with three younger host-siblings, two of them girls.

But as of Aug. 31, when Ty was welcomed to Waverly at a picnic by the Rotary Club that organized his exchange, he is adjusting
