BEAUMONT, Texas — During Hispanic Heritage Month, a mariachi group is bringing traditional Mexican sounds to Southeast Texas, a region that lacked such music for many years.

Mariachi Proyecto was founded in 2023 by Southeast Texan Hispanics Adrian Segovia and Ricardo Rodriguez, establishing the area's first mariachi ensemble.

"I grew up in Beaumont, so not really seeing mariachi, it kind of felt a little bit left out. We just kind of saw that there's a missing ensemble of Hispanic genre here in the Southeast Texas so we thought why not start a mariachi group," Rodriguez said.

The traditional music serves as a cultural touchstone for the Mexican community. Trumpet player Christian Morales described its impact on listeners.
