GRAND ISLE, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - A new order from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department has closed to fishing part of Hatchery Cove, near the Grand Isle ferry dock at Gordon Landing. State wildlife officials say it's because salmon have spawned at lower rates than they'd like over the past two years.
Bernie Pientka is a fish biologist with the state. He said that a "very high number of people" fish in the cove both during the day and at night in the fall. "That kind of fishing pressure can disrupt salmon passage into Hatchery Brook."
The state says the closed area is clearly marked with signs, directly in front of the brook. Salmon eggs normally can't survive in Hatchery Brook on their own, according to the state, but state hatcheries including the Ed Weed Fish Culture Station help kee
