COLUMBIA, S.C. — October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The observance comes as the state has recently seen several deadly cases of domestic violence.
In South Carolina, 42% of women will face violence in their lifetime, higher than the 33% national average, according to Sistercare , a Midlands nonprofit that helps survivors of domestic violence rebuild their lives.
Executive Director Leah Wicevic says many survivors need time before they feel ready to reach out for help.
“Whenever a survivor is ready to call we’re available. It might not be the right time. A survivor might have to call several times before they feel comfortable. As a trauma-informed agency, we’re very mindful of respecting our survivors and helping them when they’re ready,” Wicevic said.
