CARBONDALE — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Among women, breast cancer is the second-most common behind skin cancer, and accounts for about 30% of all new female cancers annually, according to the American Cancer Society.

A recent trend both nationally and locally is a rise in diagnoses among women younger than 40 years old, which is typically the age when regular mammograms are recommended.
