SHREVEPORT, La. - Childhood cancer is one of the leading causes of death among children in the U.S., and across the developed world. The most common childhood cancer is leukemia. September is childhood cancer awareness month , and one family is sharing their story to bring awareness.
Nine-year-old Breck Owens from Ruston was just shy of two years old when he was diagnosed with b-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He began a two-and-a-half-year treatment plan, and in 2020, Breck was declared NED, which means no evidence of disease.
"We had a big 'no mo chemo' party with that, and he's remained NED for almost five years. When we found the news that he relapsed with the same cancer in January of this year," says Breck's mom, Valerie Owens.
