NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) -- Deshawn Pittman knows his way around law and order, having spent time behind bars in the Newport News jail and prison for drug-related crimes.

Pittman, now a volunteer for sheriff's candidate, Francis Jacobson, found himself in the spotlight while attending a candidates forum Monday night. This is what Newport News Sheriff Gabe Morgan said to the audience at New Beech Grove Baptist Church.

"I see Mr. Pittman sitting back there — got his hand up," Morgan said. "... Mr. Pittman is awaiting charges ... as part of an investigation into smuggling drugs into the jail. … I said he's awaiting charges."
