SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Italian Heritage Month was kicked off in Springfield with a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall, celebrating the contributions of Italian-Americans to the community.

The ceremony honored the city's immigrant roots and recognized the perseverance of Italian-Americans, which has paved the way for future generations to thrive throughout the region.

"Italians have contributed so much to this city. It's always food and faith," said Charles Becker, President of the Italian Culture Center of Western Massachusetts. "It's always food and faith. A passion for eating, that just comes out with all of us, especially here in the south end."
