HIGH POINT, N.C. — The government shutdown isn't just about politics in Washington. It has consequences for everyday people. From paychecks to federal benefits, here are five things to know about how it could affect you.

Active-duty service members may feel the sting of a shutdown, according to Elon University professor Jason Husser.

"We're already seeing that potentially, this could be the first time in years, if ever, that active duty military might not receive payments," Husser said.

TSA agents, border patrol officers and others considered "essential" still have to show up, but without a paycheck, patience may wear thin.

"While most federal workers are still likely to be asked to come in without pay, that only works for so long," Husser said.
