BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Governor Jeff Landry is urging a stronger response to the ongoing cleanup at the Smitty’s Supply fire site, where new video footage shows oil still present weeks after the blaze.

“I immediately felt that we needed to lean in a little harder,” Landry said Wednesday, acknowledging growing frustration from residents who describe the effort as a “slow cleanup.”

The governor defended progress while noting the site poses unusual challenges.

“We have made significant progress, significant progress. And while I know it’s real easy to throw popcorn from the stands and it’s easy to make criticism when you’re not on the ground, I will tell you that this incident is a unique incident,” Landry said.
