Aberdeen defender Kristers Tobers is set to miss a 'significant part' of the season after suffering a long-term knee injury in the defeat to Motherwell.

The Dons centre-back will now be unavailable for the Europa Conference League campaign, with his injury forcing the club to exercise a new rule introduced by UEFA for the current campaign.

Teams are allowed to call up a replacement for long-term injured players, with Alfie Dorrington drafted in for Thursday's opener against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Tobers, who had only recently returned to full fitness, was forced off after an hour at Fir Park as the Dons went on to lose 2-0 to Motherwell - their second defeat against the Steelmen in a fortnight.
