OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - This day in history might sound like it was ripped right from today’s headlines .

On this day 12 years ago, the United States was in the early days of a government shutdown.

It affected civil employees who worked at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue at the time. 2,000 of 3,000 of those workers were furloughed.

As we looked back at our coverage, we found some familiar names: John Boehner, Harry Reed, and Lee Terry.

The 2013 shutdown lasted 16 days.

This past Wednesday, the federal government officially shut down at midnight as Congress failed to reach an agreement on how to continue federal funding. This is the first time it has happened in nearly seven years.
