Tragedy struck in Madhya Pradesh's Khandwa district on Thursday when a tractor-trolley carrying devotees for Durga idol immersion overturned and plunged into a pond, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 people, mostly young girls. The incident occurred in the Pandhana area, where around 20 to 25 people from Ardla and Jamli villages were travelling for the immersion rituals.
According to police, the tractor-trolley was parked on a culvert near the pond when it lost balance and fell into the water. Rescue teams, including the State Disaster Response Force, quickly arrived at the scene and have so far recovered 10 bodies. Authorities fear that the death toll may rise as several individuals are still unaccounted for. Many of the victims were children, and several others sustained serious injuries and have been admitted to Khandwa district hospital.
In a separate incident on the same day, two more people died and four others were injured when another tractor-trolley carrying devotees overturned into the Chambal river in Ujjain district. Superintendent of Police Manoj Rai confirmed the fatalities from both incidents. Eyewitnesses reported that the tractor-trolley was overcrowded, which may have contributed to the accidents.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed his condolences on social media, stating, "The accidents that occurred during the Durga immersion ceremony in Jamli village of Khandwa and the Ingoria police station area near Ujjain are extremely tragic. I express my condolences to the bereaved families." He announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased and assured that the injured would receive proper medical treatment. The search and rescue operations are ongoing as authorities continue to investigate the incidents.
