CAYCE, S.C. (WIS) - Residents in part of Cayce were able to return home after a hazmat situation caused evacuations early Thursday.

The city issued an all-clear at around 1 p.m., nearly six hours after crews initially responded to the scene and evacuated residents.

City spokesperson Ashley Hunter said a call went out at 6:52 a.m. after reports of vapors rising from a tanker truck behind a building at 627 Poplar Street. An online search matches that address to Crystal Clean, a company that provides waste management and environmental services according to its website.

Hunter said crews got to the scene and discovered that potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide were accidentally mixed with cooking oil, causing chemical off-gassing and the tanker to become warm to the touch.
