A 29-year-old man from Hinton, Alberta, has been charged with manslaughter following a fatal altercation at a Royal Canadian Legion in Jasper. The incident occurred just before 1:20 a.m. on Saturday. Jasper RCMP officers responded to the scene and found a man on the ground in need of medical assistance. Emergency crews attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased has been identified as Douglas Gunville, 56, from Valemount, British Columbia. An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Calgary ruled his death a homicide. The investigation has since been taken over by the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit.

Corporal Mathew Howell of the Alberta RCMP confirmed that Gunville and the suspect, Josh Myhr, did not know each other prior to the incident. Howell stated, "We don’t know what triggered the altercation itself, and the exact cause of death is still under investigation by the OCME."

Myhr has been released on conditions following his arrest. Howell expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, noting, "These things can happen anywhere. It’s unfortunate, and our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased. This is a reminder to stay vigilant, but not to fear to go to places that bring comfort or you still enjoy."

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the altercation continues as authorities seek to understand the events that led to this tragic incident.
