Nearly one third of the 30,000 federal employees who work in Oregon were expected to stop working after the government shut down Wednesday morning, according to data from the Oregon Employment Department.

Those 9,800 workers, who live across the state and work for a variety of federal agencies, were immediately impacted by a lapse in federal appropriations , according to the state employment agency. Meanwhile, many federal employees who continue showing up to work will likely not be paid until the shutdown ends.

Workers in nearly every county will likely be affected by furloughs, state employment data shows. That ranges from Multnomah County, where more than 12,000 federal employees work, to Wheeler County, where just a handful of federal workers are employed.
