A person was hit and killed by a school bus in Providence, Rhode Island, early Thursday morning, police said.

The Providence Police Department told NBC affiliate WJAR that a 38-year-old man died after being rushed to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition.

There were no students on the bus, just the driver and a bus driver, when the vehicle hit the man about 5:48 a.m. on the on-ramp to Route 10 north at Union Avenue, police told the station.

Investigators believe the man was in the cross walk when the crash took place.
