WOODBURY, Iowa (KWQC) - The former Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent is facing a federal firearms charge.

Ian Roberts was in federal court Thursday facing charges of being an illegal immigrant in possession of firearms, according to a media release from the United States Attorney’s Office Southern District of Iowa.

Roberts is accused of having four guns on Sept. 26 and being in the country illegally, according to allegations in the criminal complaint.

Roberts will remain in federal custody pending further proceedings.

Roberts was moved to federal custody earlier Thursday from Woodbury County Jail, officials said.

On Friday immigration authorities arrested Roberts, who they have said is living and working in the U.S. illegally, leading to questions of how he got hired.
