COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Three days after Cuyahoga County announced plans to sell up to $40 million in unpaid property taxes to a private debt collector, two state lawmakers introduced a bill to ban the practice altogether.

House Bill 493 , sponsored by Ashtabula County Republican Rep. David Thomas and Willoughby Hills Democrat Rep. Daniel Troy, would prohibit counties from selling tax lien certificates starting in January 2027.
